Description

This tour enables you to discover not only the beautiful sites of the « Bourgogne Buissonnière » but also the several rivers and canals that make Burgundy so attractive. The Loire, the Yonne with the Canal du Nivernais, Guédelon and the building of its emblematic fortified castle, in a nature full of forests and glades. Vézelay, a must-see, for all Romanesque art lovers, is also well-known for its white wine vineyard from Sancerre and Chablis.

Day by day

Day 1 La Charité sur Loire

Your hotel is located in the heart of Charité sur Loire, so you can enjoy the city center.

Day 2 Charité-sur-Loire – Sancerre – Saint-Satur 31 km

You leave La-Charité-sur-Loire and follow the Loire along a nice bicycle path. Then you reach Sancerre, one of the most beautiful vineyard landscapes in the world. You can visit la « Maison de Sancerre » and don’t miss the opportunity to have a drink of this precious beverage with a “Crottin de Chavignol”!

Day 3 Saint-Satur – Batilly-en-Puisaye 41 km

You cycle back the Loire lateral canal. Along your way, before entering in the Puisaye region, you can have a break in Cosne sur Loire and visit the Loire museum, situated in an old Augustins monastery. Your day ends in an Ecolodge located in the heart of the “poyaudine” countryside.

Day 4 Batilly-en-Puisaye – Lainsecq 45 km

Following small country roads, you will reach the unique Guédelon castle, because it is built in accordance with the middle ages methods. During your visit, don’t miss the recreational activities! Then, you leave Guedelon and you continue through the forest to Lainsecq.

Day 5 Lainsecq – Vézelay 55 km

A beautiful day awaits you! Passing through small villages and side roads, you reach today’s destination, Vézelay. One of the most beautiful panoramas of Burgundy is waiting for you, next to the Saint Madeleine basilica, centerpiece of Romanesque art and designated as UNESCO World heritage. In the middle age, Vézelay was a pilgrimage hotspot and a major halt on the Saint Jacques de Compostelle paths.

Day 6 Vézelay – Vermenton 48 km

At the beginning, after a nice slope in the middle of the “Bois de la Madeleine”, you reach the Yonne valley. You follow the Yonne all day as well as the Canal du Nivernais. Before your arrival in Vermenton, you will see picturesque sites like Châtel-Censoir, the « Saussois » , its climbing rocks and Mailly-le-Château.

Day 7 Vermenton – Chablis 35 km

After cycling through charming villages such as Irancy, famous for its « Pinot noir », you will enter the « Chablisien » and discover the most sizeable white wine vineyard of Burgundy.

Day 8 Chablis – Auxerre 37 km

Today’s stage includes the Auxerrois winegrower’s villages: Chitry, Saint Bris-le-Vineux and Bailly. In Bailly, you enter  the « Earth’s Center », in a huge cave where the “Crémant de Bourgogne” is made. After a wine tasting, you will get to Auxerre, the end of today’s trip.
