Description

This is Holland at its wettest and flattest! This part of the province of North Holland corresponds to the
image that most foreigners have of Holland. The polders, which often consist of many rectangular wet
meadows separated by ditches, are surrounded by dikes and canals. Without a visit to attractive Amsterdam, your cycling holiday would not be complete. If you cycle on a dike, you can see the difference in water level between the canal on one side and the deeper ditches in the polder on the other. This bike tour will also take you to the dunes on the North Sea coast, which not only protect the hinterland from the sea, but are also home to many species of dune flora and fauna. You will certainly like the coast of the former Zuiderzee (now the IJsselmeer) and the small towns of Edam and Volendam.

Characteristics of this journey/holiday

Day by day

Day 1  Arrival in Alkmaar

Arrival in Alkmaar For availability you may stay in Alkmaar instead.

Day 2 Alkmaar – Amsterdam 63 km

This section of the tour is also very varied. Zaanse Schans is a replica (inhabited!) Neighborhoods in the typical style of this area on the Zaan River in the 17th and 18th centuries: beautiful dark green wooden buildings, bridges and windmills. There is much to see, including demonstrations of wooden footwear making, cheese and tin. From here we continue to Amsterdam, Amsterdam welcomes you with romantic canals, bridges and … more than
800,000 bicycles! Amsterdam is a city to explore. There is so much to see and experience. Whether you like art, culture, an evening trip or just a walk along the canals, you will have a great time. A canal cruise is a great way to see the canal houses better.

 Day 3 Amsterdam – Volendam 35 km

Today you cycle along the Markermeer and through villages such as Durgerdam and Volendam, the beautiful stone houses in the characteristic center of the Catholic fishing village of Volendam seem to have been built without an organized road plan. „Overlooking the harbour, De Dijk attracts many tourists who browse the souvenir shops and take a break at a street cafe or restaurant.

Day 4 Volendam – Alkmaar 50 km

On this coast-to-coast cycle tour you cross the province of North Holland from east to west. You’ll enjoy varied landscapes, from the coast of the Markermeer to polders like Schermer and Beemster (World Heritage Site!), which were drained many centuries ago, to the flower fields (April/May) behind Heiloo/Alkmaar, cycle on the old „Sea dike of the former Zuiderzee“. Edam is a pretty, historic village. In its heyday, in the Golden Age of the 17th century, it was a town of
shipbuilders and traders, the well-preserved buildings you see in the centre date from this period. Take a stroll and enjoy the bridges, squares, gables, canals and other monuments, in summer you will love the traditional weekly cheese market on Wednesday
