Day 1 Arrival in Helsingborg
Check in to the centrally located hotel. Hopefully you will have time for some sightseeing in this beautiful, medieval town by the ocean.
Day 2 Helsingborg – Ängelholm 62 km (49 km)
The Kattegattleden coastal route from Helsingborg to Ängelholm offers scenic views of Öresund and Danish Zealand. The journey passes Sofiero Castle, the Kullahalvön peninsula with its rocky landscape and Kullaberg Nature Reserve, and Höganäs, known for its farm shops and vineyards. The route covers 62 km, with an optional 46 km shorter path via a minor road between Höganäs and Jonstorp. The destination is the historic town of Ängelholm.
Day 3 Ängelholm – Halmstad 60 km (41 km, 75 km & 94 km possible)
The Kattegattleden route from Ängelholm leads along the coast and then inland through the Bjäre peninsula, featuring a gentle climb that becomes steeper, passing through modern and historic agricultural landscapes. The route culminates in Båstad, after which cyclists can take a train to Halmstad (total 60 km, or 41 km with a shortcut). Alternatively, cycling the entire way to Halmstad without the train is 94 km (or 76 km with a shortcut). Post-Båstad, the route follows a long sandy beach before turning inland through nature reserves towards Halmstad city center. Train travel costs approximately 10-20 EUR for an adult with a bike, with regular services and bike space subject to availability.
Day 4 Halmstad – Falkenberg 57 km
The journey begins in Halmstad, heading west to popular beaches like Tylösand, Frösakull, Ringenäs, and Vilshärad. It then turns east, joining Kustvägen (the coast road), passing nature reserves with beach meadows before and after Steninge village. Near Steninge, the landscape shifts from stony to agricultural, leading to the overnight stop in Falkenberg.
Day 5 Falkenberg – Varberg 39 km
The route proceeds through Falkenberg, a historic medieval town, and then towards Varberg. En route, cyclists will encounter Apelviken, a popular windsurfing destination, and Varberg Fortress, which can be cycled to for a challenge or visited after resting in Societetsparken.
Day 6 Varberg – Kungsbacka 72 km (50 km)
North of Varberg, the landscape transitions from sandy beaches to rocky cliffs and islands such as Getterön, Balgö, and Vendelsö. The route continues to Åsa, known for its scenic beaches. A detour to Tjolöholm Castle, Sweden’s sole Tudor castle, is recommended before proceeding to Kungsbacka, a major western Swedish trade hub. The route can be shortened to 50 km by cycling from Varberg to Åsa and then taking a train to Kungsbacka. An optional detour to Fjärås Bräcka, featuring the Li grave field with 100 standing stones, offers a scenic alternative. The path then follows minor roads through fields and pastures to Kungsbacka. This particular section is not signposted, requiring map consultation or following the “2018 old stretch” GPX track, covering a total of 75 km.
Day 7 Kungsbacka – Göteborg 63 km (41 km)
The route concludes along the Kungsbacka fjord, progressing towards the ocean and passing the historic village of Särö, a former royal retreat. The trail traverses cliffs, forests, bays, and harbors, offering opportunities for swimming and relaxation. Upon nearing central Gothenburg, the path leads through Nya Varvet and the Klippan Culture Reserve, following the Göta älv river to the Göteborg Opera and Lilla Bommen harbour. Welcome to Gothenburg! The total distance is 63 km, with an option to shorten it to 41 km by bypassing the Onsala peninsula.
