Description

Cycling along the Canal du Nivernais in Northern Burgundy is a real pleasure. You are cycling on the towpath along picturesque villages and gorgeous nature. You also have the possibility to enjoy the French cuisine and to discover the charm of this beautiful area. The dynamic cities of Auxerre and Joigny are definitely worth a visit.

Day by day

Day 1 Decize

Arrival in Decize and overnight stay.

Day 2 Decize – Châtillon-en-Bazois 48 km

You leave Decize and start this beautiful cycling holiday along the Canal du Nivernais. This canal connects the Loire with the Yonne river. You arrive in Châtillon-en- Bazois.

Day 3 Châtillon-en-Bazois – Clamecy 63 km  

You cycle on the towpath and pass marvellous and diverse landscapes. You arrive to Clamecy, a pretty little town with half-timbered housed and a lovely atmosphere.

Day 4 Clamecy – Auxerre 64 km

You continue your path along the Canal du Nivernais. Wood was carried from the Morvan forest to the capital of Paris in medieval times. You are passing the Rochers du Saussois, a popular destination for day-trippers, and after a quick stop have the possibility to visit the charming village of Mailly-le-Château. On the trout-farm Crisenon, you can learn more about trout breeding and buy local products. Afterwards you can discover the cute medieval village of Cravant.  Then you are cycling further to the Caves de Bailly, where you enjoy a Crémant tasting. Next you arrive in Auxerre. This magnificent town has a wonderful city centre with its impressive cathedral, its former abbey Saint Germain and the typical half-timbered houses.

Day 5 Auxerre – Joigny 35 km

On the new cycling path, you are not only following the Canal du Nivernais but also the beautiful Yonne river. Before your arrival in Joigny you can make a stop at „Le Borvo“ a local fish production, where you have the possibility to buy local products. Joigny is a marvellous small town, which is located directly next to the Yonne river. Enjoy your last night and stroll through the beautiful city center with its typical French charm.

 Day 6 Departure

After breakfast it is time to say good-bye. Your cycling tour comes to an end. „A bientôt“!
