Description

The South-West of France is still a real insider tip. The towns on its banks bear witness to a rich cultural and historical past. You follow the beautiful river valleys of the Garonne, the Lot and the Canal du Midi and enjoy the views of idyllic landscapes, bastides proudly perched on rocky outcrops. A rich treasure to discover! The fruit and vegetable garden of South-West France is hidden here with the famous plums (Pruneaux d’Agen) – the stars of the region – strawberries and hazelnuts as far as the eye can see. An enjoyable French potpourri by bike!

2. Tag  Agen – Moissac 47 km

Along the Canal de Garonne we follow this unique cycle path with a romantic course to the bastide of Valence-d’Agen. Through the valley of the Garonne continue to Moissac and visit the former Benedictine abbey of St-Pierre. The reliefs and and sculptures of the unique figural portal possess visionary power, 76 historic capitals and a beautiful cloister are waiting to be discovered.

3. Tag  Marmade – Agen 52 km

The theme of remarkable gardens is first on theon the program.

The Notre- Dame is in Marmande next to the church of Notre-Dame and is now classified as a remarkable garden. It is a classic garden of topiary art with drawings of massive boxwood and yew trees inspired by those of the famous Château de Langeais. The plants are in the spirit of harmony and appeasement around the pool. In 1996, Alain Jay and his son his son Sébastien, nursery gardeners from father to son, created the Beauchamp theme garden. Inspired by different regions of the world, immerse yourself in different and colourful atmospheres: Zen, patio, undergrowth, parish garden, palm garden, along the water in the form of a river, a Tuscan stream with tall cypresses or an organic pond for koi carp. On the way to Agen, we stop at the architectural jewel of St Vincent’s Church with Rembrandt’s “Christ on the Cross” as an encore.

4. Tag  Aiguillon – Villeneuve s/Lot 48 km

A relaxed cycle tour leads from the confluence of the of the Garonne and the river Lot into the Garonne valley. Castles and dovecotes accompany the route and bear witness to the historical past, from the 12th – 14th century. Today, this is the home of strawberry production, especially in early summer!

5. Tag  Montauban – Toulouse 60 km

Transfer to Montauban. We start at the old bridge in the centre. Its arcades have been arching over the Tarn since the Middle Ages. This is where the city shows its most beautiful side with its architecture of orange bricks. On the right bank, the former archiepiscopal palace, with the Ingres Museum and on the left bankthe stately town houses. They are a reminder that Montauban was a town of successful merchants, despite its past as a “safe place” for Protestants, which is why it incurred the wrath of Louis XIII. After a beautiful cycle route along small side roads, we reach the Canal de Garonne again and enjoy the peace and quiet before entering the lively capital of Occitania: Toulouse. Here begins tour of the “red city” begins here, with the setting sun makes the city glow! Off into the lively life of the old town of Toulouse’s historic centre. From the Place du Capitole we visit the remains of St Thomas Aquinas: they lie in the altar shrine of the Jacobin church.

6. Tag  Toulouse – Naurouze 50 km

Today’s stage starts with a visit to the Halle de Machine. The imaginary worlds of Jules Verne and the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci move in the form of machines sometimes gigantic in size! The cycle tour starts from here, which undoubtedly along the most beautiful canal in France:

An important stop is at Naurouze, the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
